Back-to-School for Pets: How We Help Our Dogs and Cats Adjust When the House Gets Quiet Again

Every August, our house gets just a little quieter—and our pets notice it almost immediately.
The backpacks come back out. The calendar fills up. Mornings become a little busier, and before long, summer has quietly slipped into a new season.
While we’re adjusting to a new routine, our pets are doing the very same thing.
If you’ve ever watched your dog sit by the front door after everyone leaves, you know exactly what I mean.
At our house, Sam and Kirby, our two Australian Shepherds, are usually the first to notice when things change. They’re incredibly smart, and they seem to know when life shifts from slow summer mornings to busy school-day routines. Ruby Pearl, our tiny Chihuahua mix, follows me from room to room for a few days before settling into her favorite sunny spot, while Captain Jack, our black Pomeranian, prefers to quietly supervise everything from across the room. Even our cats, Blue Belle and Dally, seem to appreciate the return of a quieter house once the excitement settles down.
Every pet handles change a little differently.
The good news is that most of them adjust beautifully with a little patience, a predictable routine, and a few simple activities to keep their minds busy.
These are the same things I do in our own home each year, and they’re also some of my favorite suggestions to share with the families I care for through Minnie Pearl & Co.

A Quick Tip Before We Get Started
The first week back to school is often the biggest adjustment—for people and pets.
If your dog seems a little confused, follows you more than usual, or spends extra time watching the front door, don’t worry. Most pets simply need a few days to learn the new rhythm of the house.
Start the New Routine Before the First Day of School
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that dogs love knowing what comes next.
A few days before school begins, I start moving our house back toward its normal schedule.
Breakfast happens a little earlier.
Morning potty breaks move back to their regular time.
We fit in a little exercise before everyone heads out the door.
Those small changes tell our pets that everything is still okay—it just looks a little different than it did last week.
A Little Morning Exercise Goes a Long Way
Living with Australian Shepherds has taught me one very important lesson:
A busy Aussie is usually a happy Aussie.
Sam and Kirby are always ready for a game of fetch, especially in the morning. Even ten or fifteen minutes outside helps burn off some of that energy before the house becomes quiet.
One toy that has earned a permanent place in our backyard is the Chuckit! Fetch Ball. It has survived countless games of fetch, is easy to spot in the grass, and is one of the few toys that continues to hold Sam and Kirby’s attention.
If you have cats, don’t forget about them either. Blue Belle and Dally love a few minutes with an interactive cat wand before settling in for the day. It’s a simple way to encourage natural play and burn a little energy before everyone leaves.
Turning Goodbye Into Something Positive
One of my favorite little tricks is making the moment we leave feel exciting instead of disappointing.
As everyone grabs their keys and heads toward the door, our dogs know something good is about to happen.
Sometimes it’s a stuffed KONG Classic Dog Toy.
Sometimes it’s a favorite treat.
Sometimes it’s simply hiding a few treats around the room so everyone has a little morning treasure hunt.
That tiny routine has become one of my favorite parts of the day.

Ruby Pearl’s Pick
Ruby Pearl has quickly become a fan of Bocce’s Bakery Quack, Quack, Quack Training Treats. They’re just the right size for a little reward without overdoing it.
Captain Jack’s Pick
Captain Jack is always interested when the treat jars come out, and Bocce’s Bakery Berry Yogurt Smoothies have become one of his favorites.
And then there are Sam and Kirby.
The second they hear the lid come off one of the treat jars, they’re standing at the kitchen island convinced they’re helping me make the morning decisions.
Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Give Their Minds Something to Do
Physical exercise is important, but mental exercise can be just as valuable.
Instead of finishing breakfast in thirty seconds, I like giving the dogs something that encourages them to sniff, solve, and slow down.
If you’re just getting started with enrichment toys, I’d recommend beginning with one good puzzle toy rather than buying several all at once.
The Outward Hound Nina Ottosson Dog Brick Puzzle Feeder is one I often recommend because it is well made, easy to clean, and gives dogs a fun challenge without being frustrating.
Every dog is different, so take your time introducing new enrichment activities and always supervise until you know how your pet responds.
The Little Things Matter
Living with pets means there are always muddy paws, wet noses, and the occasional surprise.
